- Coop's and Internships
Boykin Management Company has established an internship/co-op work experience
(available on a limited basis and only at select locations), program for
college and university students who are enrolled in hospitality, or related
degree programs and for graduates of such programs.
Presently the company manages 20 hotels in Ohio, Indiana,
Illinois, North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Florida and California. These suburban, airport and resort
hotels range in size from 100 - 500 rooms Known for their exacting standards and quality,
Boykin Management Company's franchise partnerships has helped the company establish its own
operating systems, controls and sales and marketing programs.
Today, with a strong history of profitability and outstanding service as
its foundation, Boykin has operated under the Marriott, Radisson, Embassy Suites, Doubletree, Quality, Hampton,
Hilton, and Holiday Inn affiliations. Operating without an affiliation is an experience
Boykin Management Company has as well, with 2 independent resorts. Management stability,
commitment to quality and experienced hands-on approach will continue to advance
Boykins record of achieving performance that far exceeds the hotel industrys
norms.
OVERVIEW
This program exposes participants to the hotel industry through a hands-on work
experience. It is designed to supplement course work and to further stimulate interest in
a career in hotel and restaurant management. It is also designed to assess and identify
potential management candidates for future job placement with Boykin Management
Company. Our
Hotels recruit a large complement of interns who, by virtue of their
"temporary" status, help us meet our seasonal staffing needs. We welcome the
energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism interns/co-ops bring.
THE WORK EXPERIENCE
Interns/co-ops are assigned to job classifications based
on their background and experience, their personal interests, and the hotels
staffing requirements.
Hotel internship/co-op opportunities are available in Food & Beverage and/or the
Rooms Division, with limited options for rotation in most other departments including
Sales & Marketing, Human Resources, Accounting & Finance, Engineering and Retail.
Culinary interns/co-ops rotate throughout all kitchen stations. The minimum duration of
the Culinary Department internship-co-op program is twelve (12) weeks.
All interns/co-ops may be given a performance evaluation by the manager of the
department to which they are assigned. Interns/co-ops have dotted-line reporting
responsibility to the Director of Human Resources.
THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Interns are given the opportunity to participate in our Management Orientation
Program-an extensive management skills program and may at times, attend various operations
management, marketing, and staff meetings; participate in some in-house training programs
and shadow managers and the hotel Manager on Duty. Additionally, there is opportunity to
cross-train based on business demands.
Other supplemental training activities may include classroom training sessions covering
such topics as Financial Reporting, Associate Relations, Budgeting, Hotel Safety training,
etc.
ORIENTATION
Interns/co-ops receive an orientation to the hotel. This may include the following:

(Work/Learning Experience and Orientation - may be property
specific and subject to change without notice.
HOURS/PAY Depending upon business demands,
interns/co-ops work between 30 and 50 hours per week. The work week begins on Friday at
12:01am and ends the following Thursday at 12:00 midnight. The hotel operates twenty-four
(24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week. We schedule the working hours of our team to give
our guests the best service possible. Interns/co-ops pay vary according to current labor
market demands for each hotel.
TIME
FRAMES Internship/co-op programs are a minimum of twelve (12) weeks and may
extend up to a maximum of six (6) months. Internship/co-op programs are typically
available from Memorial Day to Labor Day or can be customized to take place year round for
those students seeking Fall, Winter, or Spring programs.
ACADEMIC CREDIT
Students whose degree programs require academic credit for work experience, may arrange
this as well.
GRADUATING
SENIORS Interns who have completed their college course work, will be given
top consideration for placement in regular full-time positions within Boykin
Management Company.
TRANSPORTATION
Transportation to and from work is the responsibility of the intern/co-op.
Many of our hotels are within walking distance of public transportation.
HOUSING
Housing is the responsibility of the intern/co-op. Assistance in locating
affordable housing may be arranged through the Human Resource Office.
